canstock0179531 the MSM and dog tails

By Bob Jentges (Editor Emeritus, Clarion Advisory) 5-3-12

While I have the utmost respect for freedom of speech and press as guaranteed by the First Amendment in our Constitution, I have become frustrated by what is purported as hard news that I hear and read from some outlets in the national main-stream media (MSM).  Often times it sounds and reads more like liberal propaganda dispensed by liberal apparatchiks.

Perhaps, the MSM is mis-named.  Recent polling shows a record majority of Americans have little or no trust in the main-stream media due to the MSM’s refusal to report hard news fully, accurately, and objejctively.  It should not be declared main-stream if it does not represent—or is not accepted by—a majority of Americans.

Tyranny is never more than a generation away.  Those who wish to impose tyranny prey upon the ignorance of those they wish to subjugate.  For they know it is much easier to deprive people of their rights if people are unaware of—or misled about—the truth, or what their rights are.  It seems some in the declared national MSM, and probably some in academia, and maybe even some in the scientific field, too often forsake their responsibilities to society in order to further their own political goals— in their attempts to preserve ignorance rather than advancing knowledge.

My view of  the freedom of speech/press being purveyed by the so called Mainstream Media is best reflected in this quotation by F.G. Withington: “We must remember the First Amendment, which protects any shrill jackass no matter how self-seeking.”  As I continue to I listen to and read the MSM’s hard news reports, I am also reminded of the following aphorism spoken by Abraham Lincoln: “How many legs does a dog have if you call the tail a leg?  Four, the fact that you call the tail a leg does not make it a leg.”

Unlike in generations past, today there are countless news sources available through new media.  The MSM is no longer indispensible – for a search of the truth is only a few clicks away.
